Reveille calls it quits - revmaynard (Sun Jun 29 00:53:07 2003) |
After releasing two full length albums, neither of which reached expectations, Massachusetts-based Reveille have decided to call it a day. The official press release from the band's website, http://www.reveille.cc/:
"To all our true friends and fans,
"We would like to take this opportunity to thank every one of you for the love and dedication you have shown us over the years. Your loyalty and support have always been the driving force behind REVEILLE and it will never, ever be forgotten.
"For a number of months everyone has been in the dark, wondering about the band's progress and future. We sincerely apologize for the delay, and assure you that the time taken was extremely focused on endless writing, soul searching, and tough decision making.
"At this time, we regret to inform you, that REVEILLE will no longer continue to pursue music together as a band. The chemistry between us is just not what it was, and we all strongly believe this is the right move at the right time.
"Most importantly, we will all walk away with nothing but the most incredible moments to remember. Those moments were solely made possible because of you, our friends and fans. It's been amazing seeing you all at shows, communicating through email, and discovering the different ways we've affected each other's lives. Without you, none of this could've happened.
"We hope that you will all continue to check this site for further developments and information as some of us are already amidst serious plans for new projects. More details will be posted within the upcoming weeks as well as individual contact information while things settle down.
"Once again, THANK YOU for the love and memories from the bottom of our hearts. We love you all.
"Yours truly, Drew, Steve, Carl, Justin, Chris

"FINALLY some news from Krisiun (www.krisiun.com.br). I've been waiting for some news from these guys for more than a month. too bad it's not what I've hoped for. the following taken from their website:
Even before releasing the new album entitled "Works of Carnage", Krisiun will keep doing some shows around S.America. The band just returned from a northern brazilian tour but already have a few more dates in Brazil booked for july ,and one of those shows will happen on the brazilian's biggest festival of independent music, this festival is called Porão do Rock which is located in Brasilia city (brazilian capital) have a average crowd up to 70,000 thousand people, definately in Brasil just the renowed Rock in Rio Festival is bigger than the Porão do rock. Also very soon there will be further infos about the album "Works of Carnage", DVD, and new tour dates, so keep aware.
04.07 Curitiba PR- local - Moinho São Roque Info: (41) 9986-7730
05.07 Brasilia GO - Festival Porão do Rock
19.07 Balneario Camboriú - Infos: (47) 363.8970

That DVD does sound rather appealing... I think I'm gonna have to look into it.

New Frontman For Drowning Pool? - Complication (Fri Jun 13 12:27:58 2003) |
If internet rumours are correct, then Drowning Pool may have found a replacement for departed singer Dave Williams(RIP) in the form of Built XL frontman Jason "Gong" Jones. Drowning Pool have been looking for a 4th member since the death of Dave last August after an Ozzfest show.
I have to say that if Jason Jones will be taking over the role, he will have to mighty big shoes to fill. After seeing Drowning Pool at their last UK date before Dave's death, i firmly believe that he was one of the upcoming metal vocalists and his untimely death was tragic.

Another Band fades away... - 4L145 (Wed Jun 4 18:57:59 2003) |
To continue this spree of heavy blows to excellent bands at the moment, that are either fading away (Metallica, KoRn) in trouble (Slipknot) or suffering a loss of members (Iced Earth) the awesomely, "We-don't-give-a-f**k-so-shut-up-and-listen" Abigor, sadly fades away. Correspondant; Skull
After 10 years of dedication to the Black Metal scene, Abigor have decided to split up. The following taken from their website www.infernalhorde.com/abigor
"There're different reasons for my decision, mainly because I am pissed by the entire Black-Metal genre. I simply can't identify myself, nor ABIGOR with today's Black-Metal genre anymore - it simply limits my creativity in so many ways, and I guess too many people and fans won't be able to understand the new material, because it's by far too untypical, technical and complex. Too many are addicted to old values, and our previous releases, while I hate stagnation and I am not willed to compose a copy of any previous record just to satisfy the need of the people, and our distributions!
ABIGOR was deeply rooted within Black-Metal, within it's true values - not addicted to sale-rates, not addicted to the opinion & reviews of magazines, and f**king not addicted, nor interested in the views & opinions of x-hundred fans, that tried to tell us how we should create music that they like it.
ABIGOR stud for individuality! We never set us any limits, it was the union of quite different and insane individuals that tried to realize their visions through music -self-realization - as I called it throughout the years - all on a very personal level, to sum it up, ABIGOR was the expression of extreme mental attitudes through extreme music, based on a satanic, blasphemic & misanthropic background. However, I won't discuss about decisions anymore, just accept it - ABIGOR is dead & gone!
I'd like to thank all the current, new- and ex-members, and the NAPALM crew for their 200% support. A last hail to all our die-hard fans that supported ABIGOR since 1993, and all the bands and individuals I am in frequent contact with, you know who you are - the flames' still burning, but the circle is closed...
The website will still be online and updated from time to time, just to inform you about the new/other activities of the members, but be sure, there won't be a re-union!"

Iced Earth News -- Another huge one, sorry guys - 4L145 (Tue Jun 3 15:35:25 2003) |
Is it just me or is this a decade where all great bands are either splitting up or losing bandmembers. This time Iced Earth is the "victim": Matt Barlow (lead singer) has decided to leave the band. The following 2 messages are taken from their website www.icedearth.com . The first one is from Matt himself and the second from Jon Schaffer (guitars).
Message from Matt (read first) Posted by Matthew Barlow on Monday, June 02, 2003 at 9:15AM :
In December of last year, prior to Iced Earth signing a new record deal, Jon and I had a sit-down concerning what I felt was best for my future and the future of Iced Earth. I told him that my heart was no longer into performing music and I intended to stand down from my position in the band in pursuit of
what I felt would be a more satisfying career and consequently a more fulfilled life. Jon was very adamant that I should not leave the band, and asked me not to do something that I might live to regret. I was compelled to stay with it, but as it turns out my course had remained altered.
For you to understand my position on this matter, I feel I must explain myself. As for many people, in and outside of the United States, the events ofSeptember 11, 2001 had a profound impact. For me personally, it shined a new light on life. It forced me to realize how precious and how short life is. I feel very fortunate to have been a part of something that has affected so many throughout the world, but I believe that what I am striving for will also reflect positively on those I come in contact with.
I am presently going to school in order to obtain my Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice Administration. When I have received my degree, I intend to follow with a career in law enforcement administration.
I realize that it may be difficult for some of you to understand the decision that has been made, but please believe that it has been made to preserve the integrity of Iced Earth. I know that there will be people who bad-mouth the band and me for this and that there will never be a good enough explanation for those people, I feel pity that they must live through others and I hope that someday they will find themselves in another place. I have been on a great ride with all of you and I have not a single regret. There are great things to come from Iced Earth and we will all be there to witness them.
I wish Jon and the guys well and I thank you in advance for your support and understanding.
Best wishes,
Matt
Message from Jon (read second) Posted by Jon Schaffer on Monday, June 02, 2003 at 9:16AM :
Hello All,
As you can see from Matt's post a very difficult decision has been made.
The events of 9-11 have affected us all in very different ways. I think it
made most people step back, take a look at their lives and change their
priorities. I certainly did and so did most of the people I know. In fact, I would bet
that the whole reason I chose the theme of "The Glorious Burden" for the next
CD was probably because my sub-conscious is dealing with what happened that
day. I realize that some of you don't care about what happened, and actually
that's your problem, but I know that most of you do. We have never been afraid
to show our loyalty and love of country way before 9-11, and anyone who has
paid attention knows that. The reason that I'm explaining all of this is so that
you know how close Iced Earth came to being a memory. After the attacks I was
also questioning what I had done with my life and if there was some way that I
could help people and do something that really mattered instead of this
"illusion" called the music business. When something this real and tragic happens
it has a huge effect on guys like Matt and I, who come from families who have
served, and who have a fierce dedication to our republic.
The music business is a big lie, plain and simple. It's an illusion that's
marketed and sold. It's the big production, photos, videos, promotion and image
building and all the other sh*t that makes you the fans think and feel a
certain way about whatever band or style it is that you're into, and you don't even
know it, that's the amazing thing. However, what happens behind the scenes in
the real world is often very different from the fantasies that the fans
create in their own minds about their favorite artists. Fans base these fantasies
on the images they are fed.
The point to all of this is that it's pretty hard to stay positive and take
it seriously when you figure out what a huge lie it is. After 9-11 I nearly
dissolved the band because I thought that what I do with my band is pretty
insignificant in the big picture, and it is. However, after months and months of
very heavy thought I realized that it doesn't really matter that the music
business is a big f**king lie because my songs are not, and my songs are the only
reason that I do this. I've said it before, I don't care about the rock star or
guitar hero bullsh*t, this thing called Iced Earth from the very beginning has
been a vehicle for my songs and that's it. If some fans have created another
"reality" about I.E. in their own minds, I can't help them with that, that's
the "illusion" that's getting them. Iced Earth is and always has been my band
and my vehicle to get my songs out, no matter the members that are involved.
It's entertaining to see and hear some of things people come up with when they
have absolutely no facts. Some people get it and some don't and that's ok
because in the end the only person that I need to please is me, and usually if I am
pleased then the majority of the fans will be as well. I have no need or
desire for Iced Earth to have fair weather fans. I realize that comments like this
make people think I must be a real prick, and maybe they're right, but I know
who I am and what I stand for and that scares some people.
I hope that this long and wordy post will help you all make sense of the
changes that are taking place.
Matt called me a few weeks before we started pre-production and said that he
wanted to quit the band and pursue a career doing administrative work for the
Department of Homeland Security. He feels that because he is not a songwriter
he'd have a more secure future and would be happier doing some good in the
real world rather than living the illusion of something as shallow as a "rock
star." I asked him to not do something he would live to regret, we have a new
label and I've written by far the strongest and most compelling material ever and
we basically have a new beginning. In hindsight I should not have pressured
him into staying but there was no way I could have predicted what would happen,
Matt had already quit in his heart, yet out of loyalty he was willing to give
it a shot. The recording of the vocals did not go smoothly. It was obvious to
Jim Morris (producer) and me that something was very wrong. However, we
pushed forward and Jim felt that we may have to change the way we mixed the vocals
but that we'd basically be ok. After tracking was done we proceeded with the
mix. I was becoming more and more disturbed with the way things were sounding
and by the time we started the mix on the 32 minute Gettysburg (1863) epic I
knew I had to make a serious decision. It was not a decision that I ever wanted
to make; I always expected Matt and I to jam together until we were grumpy old
men.
Here's the not so glorious burden of being the guy who makes tough decisions:
I decided to stop production and shelve the album until I find a new singer.
Matt's heart was not in it and it showed in his performance. I'm sure that's
hard for some of you to believe but it's simply a fact. There are a lot of
things you can do with today's technology to make a singer sound better but you
can't add feeling with a computer. And we all know from past recordings that Matt
has never had a problem delivering feeling, so it was obvious that it was
over and he just didn't have it in his heart to really feel the album.
The Glorious Burden is without a doubt the best album I have ever written. It
is the first time that I've written about such serious and important events.
It's also the first time that I've written about something as near and dear to
my heart as the history of our country. It probably sounds corny to some of
you but I've often used the American Revolution as inspiration to give me the
strength to carry on in this constant uphill battle. My love and passion for
the study of the Civil War is being translated to music for the first time in
the history of the band and that's what makes this album so special. I spent
countless hours creating what is most definitely my masterpiece as a songwriter.
This is not just another album about dark fantasy/sci-fi/horror material.
After Horror Show, which is a good record but the personal touch is missing on a
lot of it; I felt this would be the best way to bring that personal passion
back into the music in a new and fresh way.
So it really comes down to the fact that I still feel like I've got something
to say as a song writer, so I'm going to keep going. I would have rather
continued the way things were but I can't make someone want to do something, no
one can. This has been a very hard decision, and a costly one, but I would
rather not release an album at all than to have it haunt me for the rest of my life
because I knew it wasn't the way it should be. Also, I will carry on because
I can't see flushing nearly 20 years of hard work down the toilet because a
member has had a change of heart. I don't think real Iced Earth fans would want
that either.
I have spent some of the best times of my life with Matt. We have been able
to experience many things in our travels together and I hope he finds what he
seeks for his future, I truly wish him the best for his life.
And so another chapter in the struggle for Iced Earth and my love of metal
begins. I have to say I feel great and completely energized and am very
optimistic for our future. A strange thing considering the uncertainty that lies
ahead, but if you know me, you know I love a challenge.
The Glorious Burden will come out in all it's glory when I find the right guy
to redo the vocals. If it takes 2 months, 6 months, a year; whatever it takes
to do it right we will get it out the way it's meant to be. The true and
dedicated fans should not be concerned that this is the end; it most definitely is
not, before you know it the album will be out and it will be the best thing
you've heard from Iced Earth.
I hope most of you will understand the situation that I'm in and will be
confident that I will carry on in the same I.E. tradition as I always have;
quality, honesty and integrity...
Stay Metal!

Slipknot bassist arrested - revmaynard (Mon Jun 2 22:08:41 2003) |
Slipknot bassist Paul Gray was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana, possession of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia and a red light violation Sunday afternoon (June 1) following a traffic crash, according to the Des Moines Register.
Des Moines police officer Larry Van Ginkel said small amounts of marijuana and a substance that field-tested positive for cocaine were found in Gray's red 2001 Porsche. Two syringes were found in the car.
The crash occurred about 3:45 p.m. Sunday at Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and Carpenter Avenue. Gray's car collided with a car driven by Yvette Rochon of Des Moines, police said.
Rochon said she was proceeding through the intersection on a green light when the crash occurred. Gray tried to exchange information about himself, "but I couldn't read it," Rochon said. "He tried again but I still couldn't understand it."
She said she sent her daughter to call her husband from a pay phone. Police arrived and tried to sort out what happened.
"He tried to write me a check, but my husband gave it to police," Rochon said. "I don't know how much it was for. He said he had to get to rehearsal and that he was a rock-something."
Rochon said that immediately after the accident occurred Gray told her he was on medication. "Then he said his brakes went out."
Police said Gray, a bassist for the band, was taken to a local hospital. A police report said Gray "had impaired balance, slurred and dull speech, and extremely sleepy and dull behavior."

Sorry for the h00geness of this post guys, but I must get this message out. This e-mail was sent to me, yet again by the invaluable news source of Vorador of the House of Sin. The Black Metal Extremists plead with metal fans to boycott corrupt capitalist labels, "Displeased" and "From Beyond". Below explains why, and for what reasons. Again, sorry, this post is massive =[

Boycott Displeased / From Beyond!
This is a letter to inform, and most of all, warn you about the capitalist frauds of Displeased Records, and their pseudo-underground sub-label From Beyond Productions. Bear in mind that this is not a direct attack against the people that have ever done business with the labels we just mentioned! We are well aware of the fact that most labels, magazines and underground metalfans outside of the Netherlands aren't familiar with the situation over here concerning these scumbags. We can't blame anyone for buying great releases of kult bands such as Blasphemy, Necro Schizma, and Maniac Butcher, but we want to let true underground supporters know about the people who release their albums.
About Displeased Records: they have never been a real underground label and they never will be. Inside the Netherlands they've never hidden their goals to earn as much money as possible, from whatever style of music. They love to sell whatever they can to earn a quick buck. One of the worst examples is the horrible band Unlord. This "secret project of elite, anonymous Black Metal all-stars" (sic) turned out to be a 'funny side project' of members of the stupid grindcore band Consolation.
Some other nice details about Displeased Records include the fact that they sell every possible sh*tty piece of merchandise of traitors such as Cradle Of Filth, Dimmu Borgir and such, and they don't care about selling Nu-metal, hardcore and fag-gothic crap as well. Many underground fans aren't aware of the fact that the people behind Displeased Records, being Ron Veltkamp and Lars Eikema, are nothing but slick businessmen, who don't give a f**k about ideals and ideology put to music, which has always been a key characteristic of the Black Metal scene. Actually, they have even claimed to be against paganism and Satanism, because they are "religions", which means they are just f**king atheists.
Another 'nice' detail is that they have absolutely NO objections to sell and support bands of the new, small generation of 'Christian Black Metal' (sic) bands that are nowadays popping up in the Netherlands. The band Slechtvalk is the worst example of this, and Displeased sells all three of their available CD's. In the past, Christian bands like the well known Mortification and Horde were also included on their mail-order lists.
However, this isn't all. Things get even worse when the words nationalism and Nazism pop up. These capitalist bastards have shown the ultimate hypocrisy, in selling bands with clear N.S.-sympathies, such as Graveland (but they don't mention them in their catalogue), Burzum, Grand Belial's Key, Hate Forest, Arghoslent, and tons of others, while at the same time claiming to be hardcore anti-nazi. Their hypocrisy becomes even clearer in them selling N.S.B.M. bands without hesitation, as long as there are no visible N.S.-related symbols on it. For example, they don't mind selling Burzum shirts, because hey, "they sell damn well", but they don't sell the one on which you can see a few tiny sunwheels. Things get worse. In their battle for political-correctness in metal music they say that they cannot be blamed for selling "politically-incorrect" bands, because the girlfriend of Lars is jewish (yes, you've read it well). This kind of reasoning is not only extremely weak and illogical (the bands, the label, and the girlfriend are in no way actively related), but it also shows that Displeased is willing to exploit the racial backgrounds of those close to them to 'clear' their name to the outside world, and at the same earn them even more money than would have been the case when acting in total honesty. Using your jewish girlfriend as an argument in order to freely sell extremist bands means sinking to the lowest levels of decency.
To make clear that the frauds of Displeased Records really are businessmen in the worst possible way, is to expose how they treat 'competition' from other Dutch labels. Without mentioning names we will describe some examples: They really love to accuse other labels of selling 'nazi bands' and being 'nazi labels', even when everybody knows this is total bullsh*t. When a label gets a little bit too big for their taste they start to spread sh*tty rumors and blackmail them. In the Netherlands, none of the underground labels really gets along with them. In one of the worst cases, Displeased contacted the Dutch tax-office to start an investigation against a label that didn't pay enough taxes in their eyes. This really got the label in question into a lot of problems; a label which was truly considered to be part of the Undergound scene... We can get deeper into this topic, but I think you've got the point of how they treat real and dedicated underground labels over here.
Lately, the obscure and extreme Underground scene is unfortunately getting more and more popular. Of course, the greedy bastards of Displeased noticed this, and wanted to ca$h in on it. But hey, too bad for them, no one in this scene was interested in their sh*tty humanist releases, and also many in the underground noticed that they're in it 'for the money'. So, in order to get involved in the neo-underground, they started a sub-label called From Beyond Productions. The unfortunate Roman Buschman, who is considered an honest and dedicated person, ran this label, until the folks from Displeased made him an interesting offer: they offered to finance the items he wanted to release, and also take over the promotion and distribution. Of course, this sounds like a tempting offer, but it is nothing more than a camouflaged take-over of a potential business threat, downgrading Roman from label owner to some sort of 'underground talent scout'. And taking in account that most people in the Netherlands know the reputation of Displeased Records, the deal isn't that tempting anymore!.
So, in a very slick and filthy way, these greedy capitalist bastards earn a lot of money by selling releases from extreme and dedicated underground labels such as Sombre, No Colours, Christhunt, Drakkar, Northern Heritage, Selbstmord Services, and many others. And most of the time they are not selling it to people who are worthy of such elitist and extremist releases. We must admit that From Beyond Productions releases some great CD's and LP's, from bands that are probably unaware of the motives from the people behind this label. The same goes for the labels From Beyond arranges its trades with, because who doesn't worship acts such as old Sathanas, Blasphemy and Necro Schizma?
Right now, it is essential to boycott both Displeased Records and From Beyond Productions. Show your solidarity with the people in the Netherlands, who have been active in the Underground scene for years and gained a lot of problems because of the dirty blackmailing and blacklisting done by these assholes. Because of scum like this, it becomes even clearer that we must form 'an underground below the underground'. It is important to bear in mind that the Displeased guys are NOT interested in the Underground scene; they are merely PARASITES, leeches who suck the REAL scene dry. They are politically correct humanists and atheists and their only aim is to earn money. Take a look at their 'funny and entertaining' website www.displeasedrecords.nl...
We don't have any problems with Roman of From Beyond as a person, but with the fact that he is prostituting himself for the benefit of the traitor frauds of Displeased Records. Our scene should stay closed and inaccessible to trend labels like Displeased Records, SO BOYCOTT THEM!
We would like to ask everyone to spread this message. Most importantly: get these words across to the true labels and fanzines out there. Show your support to the real underground scene by boycotting the parasites! Keep the cult alive!
